"Every natural action is graceful" -from Ralph Waldo Emerson's 'Nature' essay.
A commentary on joy and ecstasy of being alive, Semple's work speaks to relinquishing our attachments to expected outcomes, learning how to watch what unfolds and trusting in the laws of nature to bring fourth our desires. Bold usage of nostalgic red-oranges stain the raw canvas, providing a contrast against earthy textures rendered with handfuls of sand and sediment mixed with the paint. Just as the artist has allowed access of an inner, vulnerable side to show through and create the work, so is it an invitation for the viewer to meditate and use the eyes to seek what they want to see and feel.
Based in Santa Monica, Semple draws in the beauty of his surroundings as inspiration for his work. Born in Seattle, WA, Semple attended The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington where he earned his bachelor's degree in studio art.
